When talking to conservative friends of mine it is easy to see they are upset with Iraq, Bush and the corruption in Washington, but any attempt to get these friends to concede Kerry or the Democrats would be better just doesn't go anywhere.  They are locked into the assumption that as bad as things are, Democrats would be worse.

However, I have found one line of reasoning that conservatives easily buy into: divided government is good.  They have no problem believing the problem with Republicans today is they have too much power and politicians are innately corrupt.  When I suggest that things would be much better if Democrats had control of one of the houses to supply needed checks and balances, they actually agree.
